Fothergill Island re-opened in August 2021 after an extensive refurbishment programme.
The Fothergill aims to maintain the rich traditions and history of the island. Two unique and intimate camps comprise a total of 10 spacious and luxurious tented suites in pastel colour tones, blending together and gathered around large sitting, dining, library, bar and pool areas that are perfect for relaxation.
The five luxury Lake Suites are each placed on 115 sqm (1,200 square feet) of decking. These can be configured to become either a double or twin room with a luxurious en-suite bathroom. Some include an outside shower or large bathtub with a spectacular view. Each suite features a writing desk, private lounge, generous and comprehensive mini bar and tea and coffee station. All have a tranquil and relaxing outside seating area that includes a private plunge pool and a day bed, from where you can watch the passing parade of wildlife, absorb the African skies or simply observe .... time.
For families, there are two additional and equally spacious Family Suites with approximately 160 sqm (1,700 square feet) of decking. In addition to all of the standard suite inclusions, the family suites include a second bedroom with matching en-suite facilities and a spacious central reception area within which the mini bar as well as tea and coffee station are positioned.
The remaining three suites comprise Island Suites which can either be booked exclusively or combined as part of the Lake Suites. The Island Suites offer superlative comfort and privacy, offering views over the Lake from magnificent four poster beds and from raised platforms and walkways. These suites share a private sitting room, bar and dining facility, and overlook a private pool.
The public areas in each camp offer Wi-Fi connectivity with plenty of room to relax (or work!). Both the Lake Suites and Little Fothergill have a swimming pool, alfresco seating areas and decks, as well as shady indoor lounges and dining areas.
The whole camp has been carefully designed to melt into the surrounding natural environment that is a mix of lake, mopane forest and the large floodplains of the Matusadona National Park, and take inspiration from the profusion of lilies populating the camp's central eco-pond. The overall atmosphere of the camp is cool, light and airy, in keeping with the beauty of the environment, and is a celebration of sustainability - 95% of the island's extensive energy requirements come from solar power.
The combination of Lake Kariba, the wildlife-rich grass-covered floodplains, the woodlands and the mountains of the Matusadona National Park provide a truly diverse and rewarding African safari experience, with wildlife-viewing and other activities carried out on land and water by foot, in vehicles or on boats.
We truly believe that the world does not have time for “average” and at Fothergill Island we promise a bespoke and unique luxury safari and fishing experience for all our guests. Our philosphy embraces strong environmental and philanthropic principles, with a strong custodial sense of protection and a clear understanding of the urgency and need to protect precious ecosystems and the life they support for future generations.
We welcome families with children, and have specifically geared our camp to keep children of all ages fully entertained with many profound and unfiltered moments in the bush throughout their stay. Families will enjoy sharing a front-row seat to one of the continent’s most iconic wildlife and wilderness areas.
