Wilderness Safaris - Ruckomechi Camp

We are a responsible luxury ecotourism company.

The reason we exist is to protect pristine wilderness areas and the flora and fauna - or biodiversity - that they support. We believe that in protecting these areas, and including the local communities in this process, we will make a difference to Africa and ultimately the world. In short, we believe that the world's wilderness areas will save humankind.

Through our unique hospitality, light footprint luxury safari camps and private access to more than three million hectares of Africa's finest wildlife areas, we offer our guests a unique and life-changing experience.

Ruckomechi Camp

On the middle reaches of the Zambezi River, a hundred kilometres below Lake Kariba is the Mana Pools National Park situated in the heart of the Zambezi Valley. Ruckomechi Camp lies on the banks of the Zambezi, shaded by a large grove of acacia and mahogany trees and with a superb view of the mountains of Africa's Great Rift Valley across the river in Zambia.

Ruckomechi Camp accommodates guests in ten spacious en-suite tented units, including a honeymoon suite, all of which overlook the Zambezi River. Each tent has both indoor and outdoor showers, and the camp boasts a favourite amongst guests: its outdoor 'bath-with-a-view' in a secluded, scenic spot. The central dining, bar, library and lounge areas face the escarpment and are connected to the rest of the camp by low-level walkways that minimise our environmental impact. There is a separate deck with infinity pool for swimming and sun bathing, and an inviting, cushion-strewn star gazing deck.

Following on from our Zambian camps, Ruckomechi Camp has aimed to be as environmentally friendly as possible - hot water and lighting for each unit is provided by solar power.

The camp vegetation is dominated by broad canopied albida trees, much loved by elephants for their rich nutritious pods; these animals often join visitors in camp for a light meal!

The area is renowned for large numbers of elephant, buffalo, hippo and eland, especially in the winter when they concentrate along the river. Predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog are all found in the area. Birdlife is superb, particularly for both mopane woodland and riverine species with numerous local specials like Collared Palm-Thrush, Racket-tailed Roller, Purple-banded Sunbird and Black-throated Wattle-Eyes.

Activities at Ruckomechi Camp include wildlife viewing in open 4x4 vehicles, on motorised pontoon boats, on foot and in canoes.

African Bush Camps

Kanga Camp has six tents set in the heart of Mana Pools National Park. The main area of the camp is on decking overlooking the pan. A relaxing lounge area under the shade of large trees overlooks the splash pool and pan.

There is the choice of taking game drives in open-topped four-wheel drive vehicles or walking with professional guides. The opportunity to leave one's vehicle and track game on foot is an experience rare in the national parks of Africa and in Mana Pools in particular this provides the visitor with the chance to track game in safety with an experienced professional guide. Other activities include night drives as well as canoeing which is organised on request.

Game abounds on the flood plains and in the Mopane woodlands of Mana Pools. Kanga Pan particularly attracts great game in big concentrations as it is the only water found in the floodplain above the river. The predators, including lion, wild dog and leopard are often sighted and large concentrations of buffalo can be found in the Mopane woodland and open plains studded with Ilala Palms. Mana Pools Safari Company

Sarah Stevens and Milo Harrup operate and manage The Mana Pools Safari Company tented camp - a colonial-style safari camp, with a modern touch.

Sarah draws from her experiences growing up with her father, the highly esteemed guide, John Stevens. Together, Milo and Sarah, newly married, have brought a contemporary style to this luxury camp on the banks of the Zambezi River.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1988, Mana Pools National Park is one of the most beautiful game reserves in Africa.   Mana means “four” in one of the vernacular languages in Zimbabwe, and it refers to the four large permanent pools left by the Zambezi River as it flows into this flood plain area. This is one of Africa's best game viewing areas, as many large animals come here in search of water. It is also an excellent area for fishing and bird-watching, rich in vegetation diversity from river frontage to forests of mahogany, wild fig, acacia albida and baobabs.

Mana Pools Tented Camp, is situated on the southern (Zimbabwean) bank of the Zambezi River, within the National Park and World Heritage Site, and looking out across the natural river boundary towards Zambia.

View Tailormade Safaris

Tailormade Safaris

Tailormade Safaris specialise in putting together individually tailor made, private guided and independent travel safaris for individuals, families or small groups into the wild and remote areas of Southern Africa.

Run by Humphrey Gumpo, an experienced professional safari guide and camp manager, and his partner Constance Lahey, a tourism graduate and travel consultant of many years, the company also caters for special interests including birding, photography, filming, walking and canoeing, and has French, German and Portuguese speaking tour leaders.

Tailormade Safaris try to incorporate as many different ways as possible of viewing, experiencing and enjoying interactions with the wildlife encountered.  Accommodation choices range from rustic, explorer experiences in a dome tent to the more luxurious safari camps. Journeys are focused on concentrations of wildlife that are not bombarded by the same concentrations of vehicles or boats.

In choosing their destinations, Tailormade Safaris try as much as possible to venture into remote areas and to stay in camps designed for small groups, thus offering an exclusive and intimate African experience. Sound environmental and nature conservation policies, community involvement and fair trade are also very important factors when they choose camps for their guests.  “We believe by delivering wildlife experiences on the African continent, like no other in the world, we are creating a brighter future for Africa, her people and her wildlife”, says Humphrey.

Transfer Options
When guests come on safari, the time they can spend away from home is often limited.  For this reason, Tailormade offer various, flexible transfer options.  Flying in a light aircraft is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between places.  Some remote areas do not have airstrip facilities and a helicopter flight is an option for a unique experience, rather than a long drive through some relatively unproductive tracts of land. However in some cases, a road transfer enhances the journey, and the company offers a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle (4x4 if necessary).  This allows visitors to absorb the scenery, landscape and the wildlife seen along the way and at the same time receive an in-depth briefing about the ecology, culture and history of an area.

Safari Options
Tailormade offers a number of sample safari options in Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe all designed to create journeys of discovery to the best destinations at the best time of the year.  The focus, within Zimbabwe, is on the wild areas of Mana Pools National Park (walking and canoeing in this magnificent World Heritage Site), Matusadona National Park  and the shores and water wildernesses of Lake Kariba, the rugged escarpment mountains of Chizarira National Park and its neighbouring Tonga communities, the teeming wildlife of Hwange National Park and the spectacular adventure thrill of Victoria Falls.
