Tiger Safaris

Tiger Safaris is one of the most established camps on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River.  Situated just downstream from the Chirundu border post,  our camp is equipped with everything you need - you won't have to worry about a thing.

We have 6 beautiful chalets set on the banks of the Zambezi River where you will be able to relax, experience frequent visits by our local community (elephants, hippo and many others) and have the opportunity to catch one of the most exciting fresh water fish in the world, the Tiger Fish.

There’s nothing like waking up to a Great Zambezi sunrise or relaxing at the end of the day to the view of the sun stretching across the water.

Our five thatched, riverside chalets are located approximately 2 km off the main road.  They can accommodate 6 in two bedrooms, each with a bathroom and fully-equipped kitchen.  There are also outside braai (barbeque) facilities and a swimming pool overlooking a waterhole.  Chalet 6 is located about 1 km away, but also right on the river, and is larger, accommodating up to 8 people.
We have boats for hire, together with guides, who will take you for a Tiger fishing experience you will never forget. Alternatively the area is wonderful for birdwatching, game viewing and photography.

African Bush Camps

Kanga Camp has six tents set in the heart of Mana Pools National Park. The main area of the camp is on decking overlooking the pan. A relaxing lounge area under the shade of large trees overlooks the splash pool and pan.

There is the choice of taking game drives in open-topped four-wheel drive vehicles or walking with professional guides. The opportunity to leave one's vehicle and track game on foot is an experience rare in the national parks of Africa and in Mana Pools in particular this provides the visitor with the chance to track game in safety with an experienced professional guide. Other activities include night drives as well as canoeing which is organised on request.

Game abounds on the flood plains and in the Mopane woodlands of Mana Pools. Kanga Pan particularly attracts great game in big concentrations as it is the only water found in the floodplain above the river. The predators, including lion, wild dog and leopard are often sighted and large concentrations of buffalo can be found in the Mopane woodland and open plains studded with Ilala Palms. Kudu, zebra, impala and waterbuck can be seen on the surrounding plains. Elephant take advantage of the plentiful "albida" trees in the area. Bird watching is also a great attraction of the area.

Zambezi Life Styles is an exclusive, luxury, mobile 8-bedded tented camp on the shores of the Zambezi River.  Open between May and October for a minimum 3-night stay, this camp offers a combination of adventure and elegance for private safaris, with superb walking, canoeing, fishing and game-driving activities.  Visitors can combine this option with a stay at Kanga Camp for a varied experience of the magic of Mana Pools.

African Bush Camps also runs Safari Logistics, a small-aircraft air taxi service linking hotels, lodges, camps and safaris in Victoria Falls, Hwange, Matusadona, Kariba and Mana Pools.  For more information on this see Safari Logistics

African Fisherman Magazine

The African Fisherman magazine is published six times as year by Mag-Set Publications (Pvt) Ltd. and offers a "shop window" to adventure angling in Southern Africa.

Editorial content is aimed at the average fisherman and is structured very much on a "How To" basis.  Many articles are written by anglers who are fishermen first, journalists second. This provides a varied and interesting content to the magazine which, according to our readership, sets us apart from other publications, and is the key to our success.

Contributions are from countries all over Africa, and cover world markets, local and international tournaments, specialised techniques and new theories. Specialised features on fishing destinations include general information on fishing and boating facilities, venues, accommodation etc. for those looking for something different or unique.

Our readership includes angling enthusiasts of all ages, races, sexes and walks of life from the Southern African region and in more than 20 countries around the world.

We are committed to the preservation of the environment and its angling resources.  We support junior angling and a policy of selective harvest of all species, catch and release of certain species, and the fostering of goodwill among all beneficiaries of these resources.

The African Fisherman is predominantly focused on inland  fresh water fishing.  However, as our regional readership increases, editorial covering saltwater and coastal destinations (Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and the East Coast) is included on a regular basis. Fish species are similar throughout the Southern Africa region, and much of the content is applicable to anglers anywhere in Africa.

Bushlife Safaris - Ruwesi Canoe Trails & Chitake Camp

Ruwesi Canoe Trails is a mobile canoe safari offering three to four nights down the Zambezi River.  Canoeing is a unique experience and allows a different perspective when game viewing.

With canoe safaris running between April and November, we offer five 3m x 3m walk in tents each with en-suite bucket shower and flush loo.  Guests will enjoy wonderful overnight stays at Little Vundu, Chessa and Ilala campsites.  Whilst canoeing we have a team of men setting up camp so they are ready when guests arrive each afternoon (anytime between 4pm and 6pm).

The days of canoeing are broken up by guided walks and game drives with your professional guide, so that guests get the opportunity to see a little of the inside of the park.  However a combination of a few nights at Vundu either before or after a canoe safaris is a great way to experience the variety of that Mana Pools has to offer.

Chitake Mobile Tented Camp is offered on request.  Chitake Spring is located at the foot of the Southern Zambezi escarpment, where the valley floor climbs the mountains to join the plateau of the Highveld.

Chitake is particularly active in the months of July through to November, when all the water dries up on the valley floor and the animals congregate around the spring as the only source of water. Huge herds of buffalo pour in late in the afternoon and as a result lions are prolific in the area.   We use the same tents as the Ruwesi Canoe Trail, but the tents stay under the shade of a tree for the duration of the stay, on average three nights.

Mornings are spent walking the foothills searching for game, and afternoons at the spring provide some spectacular game viewing. This is a true wilderness experience.  We do not use vehicles so everything is done on foot.

Ruwesi Canoe Trails and Chitake Tented Camp are part of the Bushlife Safaris portfolio which includes Vundu Camp and Little Vundu

View Chundu Island

Chundu Island

Chundu Island is located in the Zambezi River, 21km upstream from the majestic Victoria Falls and forms part of the Zambezi National Park. The island is over 1km in length and affords fantastic birding and wildlife experiences both on the island and on the mainland.

Transfers are done from Vic Falls town to Chundu island on 4x4 game drive vehicles Transfer times take an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how much wildlife is seen on the way. Guests are then transferred onto a boat for a short trip across the river to the island.

Our 6 chic tented rooms lining the river bank are built on wooden platforms and are made of canvas. All rooms are equipped with extremely comfortable twin beds, fans and a large en suite bathroom with an outdoor rustic shower. Each tent is located under the shade of some of the island’s most magnificent trees, each with its own private deck with a perfect view of the Zambezi River and surrounding National Park.

The dining area, lounge and bar are a short walk from each room. There is an expansive deck in the midst of a large group of Natal Mahoganies that provides the most glorious shade year-round. A fire pit is nestled in the middle to relax next to in the evenings, where you can enjoy the sounds of the bush and the blanket of stars overhead.

Meals are fully inclusive and are served around a large open-air dining table, where guests and hosts can share adventures of their day.   The bar, made out of exquisite driftwood and carefully constructed around a group of large trees divides the dining room and lounge. Local beverages are inclusive.

Activities at Chundu Island include morning and evening game drives on the mainland, morning and evening river cruises, and fishing either from the river bank or by boat. You can also take a nature walk around the island enjoying our magnificent trees,  our resident bushbuck, and the many bird species found in the area.  Chundu Island is a birders paradise. Without trying very hard one can see up to 120 species in a two-night stay. A few of the Zimbabwe “specials” seen in this area are the Schalow’s Turaco, African Finfoot, Rufous-bellied Heron, Western Banded Snake-Eagle and Rock Pratincole, just to name a few.

Activities in Victoria Falls town can also easily be arranged e.g. bungee jumping, elephant back safaris and helicopter flights over Victoria Falls.

The camp electricity is supplied by generators which are strategically positioned so that there is minimal noise or impact.  The rooms are equipped with LED lighting  which can operate throughout the night as the generator is turned off once all guests have gone to bed.  Charging of cameras, computers and phones can be done at night or in the morning. Pathways are lit all night with an LED system. Solar geysers are used which provide incredibly hot water at any time of the day.

Being on the river bank winter mornings and evenings can get very cold, so it is advisable to bring the appropriate clothing.

Chundu Island is your ideal African hideaway. It is peaceful, intimate  and beautiful, offering all the right elements of a truly African experience – yet the diverse  tourism experiences of the Victoria Falls are just on its doorstep.

Mana Pools Safari Company

Sarah Stevens and Milo Harrup operate and manage The Mana Pools Safari Company tented camp - a colonial-style safari camp, with a modern touch.

Sarah draws from her experiences growing up with her father, the highly esteemed guide, John Stevens. Together, Milo and Sarah, newly married, have brought a contemporary style to this luxury camp on the banks of the Zambezi River.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1988, Mana Pools National Park is one of the most beautiful game reserves in Africa.   Mana means “four” in one of the vernacular languages in Zimbabwe, and it refers to the four large permanent pools left by the Zambezi River as it flows into this flood plain area. This is one of Africa's best game viewing areas, as many large animals come here in search of water. It is also an excellent area for fishing and bird-watching, rich in vegetation diversity from river frontage to forests of mahogany, wild fig, acacia albida and baobabs.

Mana Pools Tented Camp, is situated on the southern (Zimbabwean) bank of the Zambezi River, within the National Park and World Heritage Site, and looking out across the natural river boundary towards Zambia.
