Cholera scare no threat to visitors

Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe is now under control

Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe is now under control

Unicef and The World Health Organisation have declared that the recent, rainy-season cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe is now under control.  While not denying the impact of this serious disease on poor communities which lack infrastructure, hygiene, and clean water, please note that cholera is NOT (and never has been) a threat for visitors.

For a start, it is a disease which is prevalent during the rains (November οΎ– March).  The dry season is now upon us and the threat has diminished accordingly.

Secondly, all hotels, restaurants, camps and lodges are very far removed from areas affected by cholera (usually in over-crowded cities where water systems have broken down or rural areas with no boreholes or access to clean water).

Thirdly, all tourism facilities maintain the strictest hygiene codes regarding food and water supplies.  Visitors have no reason to be worried.   Bottled, boiled or clean borehole water is provided for guests and all fruit and vegetables are washed in clean water, so ice and salads are perfectly safe.  These are normal, sensible precautions regarding hygiene, as applicable anywhere else in the world.   Visitors doing their own catering are simply advised to take the same care.
