Road tolls introduced on Zimbabwe's main roads
by WildZambezi.com

10-Aug-09

From Saturday 8th August 2009, all travellers on Zimbabwe's main roads are now required to pay road tolls.  This has been a controversial issue for some months, but government sources argue that until taxes are levied on motorists, roads cannot be properly maintained or improved to the standards required.

Toll booths have been set up on all major roads in the country.  Private motor vehicles of all sizes (including 4x4s) pay US$1 per toll (Trailers and motorcycles are toll-free).  Charges are higher for minibuses, buses, trucks and heavy duty vehicles.  Payments are to be made in cash only.  Change will be a problem, so be sure to carry small denomination notes.  (There are plans to introduce tokens and swipe-card facilities, but these are not yet in place).

Long-haul travellers on the main roads should expect to meet more than one toll as follows:
Beitbridge-Harare - 3 tolls
Harare - Kariba/Mana Pools/Chirundu - 2 tolls
Harare - Nyamapanda - 2 tolls
Harare - Bulawayo - 2 tolls
Bulawayo - Hwange - 1 toll
Bulawayo - Vic Falls - 2 tolls.
